CHICAGO - Babies who don't get enough sleep may gain too much weight, new research shows.

A Harvard study found that babies and toddlers who sleep fewer than 12 hours daily are at greater risk for being overweight in preschool, startling evidence that the link between sleep and obesity may affect even very young children.

The solution to your child’s sleep problems might be a bedtime routine. A new study in the journal Sleep shows that a nightly routine helps young children sleep better.

The study involved 405 children. There were 206 infants between 7 months and 18 months of age, and 199 toddlers between 18 months and 3 years of age. Mothers completed a daily sleep diary that included details of their child’s sleep patterns.

For one week all of the mothers followed their normal bedtime routine with their child. Then for two weeks half of the mothers continued this normal routine. They were the “control group.” The other half of mothers followed a new, three-step routine each night for two weeks.

Press Release

OTTAWA - Health Canada reminds parents and caregivers that the safest place for an unsupervised baby to sleep is alone in a crib. Babies and young children should never be placed to sleep in products that are not specifically designed to accommodate an unattended sleeping baby, such as car seats, strollers and change tables.

Health Canada was recently informed of two separate baby deaths in which the babies were found face down on playpen accessories. In addition, Health Canada recently received a report of the death of a baby who had been placed to sleep in a car seat.
