NEW YORK - Half of U.S. mothers are not getting enough sleep and they believe getting more rest would make them better parents, according to a U.S. study.

A nationwide survey of 500 mothers by research firm Braun Research found 54 percent of respondents said they were not getting enough sleep.

The brown bat sleeps for nearly 20 hours each day. Humans function best on a comparatively thrifty seven to nine, but more and more people are having trouble getting even that. The National Sleep Foundation recently found that just 25 percent of Americans get at least eight hours of rest on weekdays and that 60 percent of women say they often sleep poorly.

NEW YORK - Benjamin Franklin said “early to bed early to rise,” but he claimed he needed only a few hours of sleep. So do Martha Stewart, Jay Leno and others not so famous.

Are people who claim to feel good on hardly any sleep just stronger than the rest of us?

Actually, studies in sleep labs reveal that a small percentage are actually deceiving themselves.

Do you wake up at 3:00 am and look at the clock — then can’t go back to sleep ‘til dawn? Sleeping problems like difficulty falling asleep, trouble staying asleep and restless sleep affect some two-thirds of all women over 35. What most women don’t realize is that insomnia and interrupted sleep patterns are often related to hormonal imbalance, and that once you solve the underlying cause you can reclaim your healthy nights’ sleep — without using sleeping pills.

My patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) describe the feeling to me as the “creepy crawlies.” The persistent tingling leaves them feeling like they just have to move. And what’s worse is that this urge to move can make it impossible to sleep, relax, or even sit still. Though it’s reported twice as often by women than men, the truth is, I don’t see very many patients with restless legs syndrome. But those I do see have oftentimes struggled with it for a long time without help.

Every expectant mom knows that sleep will be catch-as-catch-can after her baby is born. But sleepless nights plague women throughout pregnancy, too.

A National Sleep Foundation poll found that over three-quarters of women slept worse during pregnancy than they did when they weren't pregnant. What's more, new moms and pregnant women were more likely to suffer insomnia than any other group of women.
