CHICAGO - Night terrors, which send children into sudden inconsolable screaming, are at least partially inherited, according to a study published on Monday.

"Our results show that there is a substantial effect of genetics factors in sleep terrors," though no specific genes behind the phenomenon have been identified, Dr. Bich Hong Nguyen of the Sleep Disorders Center at Montreal's Sacre-Coeur Hospital and colleagues reported.

NEW YORK - Consistently getting a good night's sleep may help protect children from becoming obese as adults, a study published Monday suggests.

Researchers found that among more than 1,000 people followed from birth to age 32, those who got too little sleep as children were more likely than their well-rested counterparts to become obese adults.

As much as 4 percent of all U.S. children suffer from a sleeping disorder called obstructive sleep apnea.

"I noticed his really heavy breathing and snoring," said Kris Vail, Timmy's mother. "I noticed every now and then, when I'd wake up in the middle of the night. I'd hear him just [gasp] like short breaths, and it made me a little nervous."
